Blog post #5: Off-color

Cameron met a girl that worked With her mom, named Asia. Asia was one of the project girls that were in the mall, but Asia said they were just messing with them. Asia then introduces Cameron to some of the other girls that she's friends with. Cameron gets her braided back in cornrows by one girl, but her mom likes it. Cameron's about to turn sixteen and they're going to have a party (Cameron and her new friends). At the party everyone was dancing and playing loud music and having fun. There was a lot of boys, and girls there and it was packed. Then the old woman that met's grandson was coming down to bring Cameron her present. They introduced themselves to each other and became good friends, and then more.

Blog post #4: Off-color

Cameron saw boxes laying in her mom's room that she hadn't unpacked yet, and opened them out of curiosity. In the boxes, she found pictures of her and her some man in the hospital when she was a baby. The man in the pictures were her dad, who she found out was African-American. She didn't know how to tell her friends, or how to feel about it. She was confused on whether she was black, white, or biracial. She finally tells her friends and first they didn't believe her, but then they did and the were cool with it.

Cameron and her mom had to move to the projects, away from her friends. It was summer at this time in the book and there was no school. At first Cameron didn't want to live in the projects but then they met an old woman who lived in the same projects as them and befriended her. Since they were the only white people there, they wanted to have friends so the could fit in better.  The had no cable or technology, besides Cameron's phone. Cameron then learns something about her dad that changed her and her friends' lives forever.

Book blog #2: Off-color

In school they had an unplanned debate in Cameron's classroom about Othello. Then Cameron and her friends went to the mall. While they were at the mall, they ran into a group of girls from the projects and got into an argument with them. Cameron and her mom had to move because Elga, the salon owner had to shut down the salon. Now they were certain they were going to get evicted and have no where to live.

Book Blog #1: Off-Color

 The book Off-Color is about a girl named Cameron, whose friends call her 'Cam'. Cameron goes to a high school in Brooklyn with all of her friends, but doesn't really care about school. She texts during class, skips school, has bad grades. One day Cameron's teacher catches her texting during class and gets her in trouble. Cameron then gets up and yells at the teacher and then leaves school. Then, she goes to the beach and runs into an old creep, and kicks sand in his face. Then she goes to her mom's job at the nail salon, told her about her day so far, then took a cab back to school.

Triangulation Essay

       Dystopian literature has many traits that are used throughout different pieces of dystopian texts. One of these traits is that the natural world is feared. What this trait means is that the characters and society mentioned in the text fear or frown upon naturality and anything man-made. This trait appears in the dystopian texts:  Anthem , “Harrison Bergeron   ” and Antz. First will be Anthem, then “Harrison Bergeron”, and last  will be Antz.

       In Anthem this dystopian trait is very significant. The natural world is a huge part of  Anthem’s plot. The ‘Uncharted Forest’ for example, is symbolizing nature, whereas the word ‘uncharted’ symbolizes how the society fears it. Another reason is the ‘Unmentionable Times’. During the ‘Unmentionable Times’  the natural world wasn’t feared, which is why they think of that time period as a dark age and don’t even allow the people to mention it.
       In “Harrison Bergeron” the natural world is feared as well. In this scenario: natural abilities, talents and things like that symbolize the natural world. Also, the handicaps and the strictness of the Handicap General portrays the fear of the natural world. Another way is how they shot Harrison. Harrison was trying to rebel against the society and reveal the natural world to everyone. They then shot Harrison and this shows their fear of the natural world in “Harrison Bergeron”.

       In the movie Antz the ‘Natural World’ is represented by the world outside of the colony. When Z and The Princess escaped into Insectopia they were afraid and this shows the fear of the natural world. Another way this fear is shown  is how the colony reacted when they found out where The Princess was. The colony was scared because they believe the natural world is dangerous. In Antz the colony’s workers and soldiers  need each other and work in an organized fashion to get what they need done. The natural world is unorganized and free, and that would mess up the way they work.

In every dystopian text, this trait can be applied or visualized in some way. In the texts, the society wants things ran a certain way and the natural world is free. Freedom usually can overcome the conformity, leading to individuality, which is the main reason why the natural world is feared. In today’s society the trait still shows up. In the media everyone looks perfect and by using the methods they use, they cause people to start fearing the natural world and how people naturally look.
