A World Without Media

                                      By: Briston Combs

Media can range anywhere from advertisements, to music, to reality TV. Media is what’s around us, giving us information, telling us about new products. TV is the main source for media, along with computers, billboards, everything around us. A world without media would not be a safer or improved place because the media is our connection to the outside world and what’s happening around the globe. The media is very influential and is seen everywhere. Media influence is whatever you see in the media that influences you to think a certain way or believe a certain thing. Magazines, television, the news, advertisements, and reality TV are all places where you would find media influences. Media has been around for longer than anyone can remember, with newspapers and people who actually tell people about things in person. If the world lost all of its media we wouldn’t know about any accidents that have happened, what the weather or traffic is like, missing children, people who have died. Without media nobody would know about things that are happening worldwide and even locally.

A world without media would not be a safer and improved world to live in, because we wouldn’t know what was going on around the world and we couldn’t learn from other people’s mistakes, either. If we didn’t have media we would lose a lot of entertainment as well. People say the media is ruining our generation and it’s true, but the media also has good sides like seeing crimes and things like that on TV and learning from them. A world with less media would be a better world to live in, but a world with no media wouldn’t. The media helps a lot by showing crimes and missing children because without media people wouldn’t really know things like that even happened in the world. For instance: Nobody would really know about the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting, or the World Trade Center if it wasn’t for the media telling about it.

People say that media ‘isn’t good for anything at all’ and ‘all they do is talk about celebrities’ but it’s not true because they talk a lot about what’s going on in the world like the news for example. The news tells about what’s happening in the world to inform you, but it can sometimes be biased which is when it’s not that helpful. People also say that the media invades celebrities’ privacy, which is true but they signed up for that when they became a celebrity; there’s no way around it. Celebrities are doing whatever there doing that’s newsworthy to get onto the magazine cover anyways, so if they don’t like the attention, stop doing whatever it is that they’re doing. Celebrities are also ‘news’. Whatever they’re doing always finds its way to the headlines, no matter what it is. Even though this is true, there are still many sources that give helpful information and that’s the kind of media that would be bad to get rid of. This kind of media wouldn’t be good to get rid of, because it’s helpful to us in a lot of ways.

If the media was abolished we wouldn’t know about any new products that could be helpful to everyone. If there was no media, TV would be less interesting, because there wouldn’t be any ads and nobody could make money off of it, driving companies bankrupt. A world without media would be bad for the economy.  Another form of media is music. If there wasn’t any media, there would be no music and music sales are another part of the economy. Advertising is also a part of the economy because when you advertise products, people can see the advertisements and buy the product. For example, automobile companies such as Chrysler have started doing better thanks to advertisements and publicity.  Music and advertisements tie in together because you see ads for music all the time, on YouTube and everywhere else.

A world without media would not be a good idea at all, because we need advertisements, as much as we hate them, and we also need news. If we took away media, we wouldn’t have any news, music, ads, our favorite TV shows etc. If we wanted to make the world a better place, taking away media would not be the thing to do.
