Satire Essay Rough Draft

The year is 2087 and gas prices have just went down to $250 a gallon. They used to be at $307, even though most people drive fully electric smart car nowadays. My mom still drives a gas powered car because she can’t afford a smart car. We’re considered a poverty family, making $400,000 dollars a year, but I read that back in the day that was plenty. The Presidents are working to better the economy, but since twenty bucks can barely buy a carton of eggs, they’re not doing so well. I’m only 13 but I have two jobs both on a farm milking cows and things like that. I make $10 a day, but what could that buy me? I’m on my way home from my job at the farm because I’ve been working for eight hours and I’ve made my $10 for today. I hate my job, but with the hard times and inflation of today’s times I have to work to provide for my family. My mom didn’t go to college, and since you basically have to go at least twelve years to even get a decent job, I have to work. I have one sibling, because that’s the limit. They put a limit on the number of children you can have in the 2030’s. There’s 11 billion people in the world and people are getting hard to feed and teach in school, so there’s a limit. In my class there are 47 people, one teacher and two assistants. The technology in my school is terrible since it costs way too much to buy technology for all the students. We’ve had to convert back to blackboards since ink costs too much and we have maybe 2 computers in all of the 250 classrooms total. I have 4 classes in my school ,seven o’clock to 12. After we get out of school at twelve o’clock another group of students come in and stay five hours too. Everybody always tells me that the economy and population is going to get better and I’ll take their word for it but I don’t completely believe that. After the economy gets better I can quit my job, and live life like a regular person back in the day. I always read about the early 2000’s because I believe I was born in the wrong time period and need to go back in time. I could get a 14 year college degree in science and invent  a time machine but of course, that would cost too much. Everyone from back then is used to the bad economy, but somehow I’m not, and I wasn’t even thought of back then. That might sound stupid, but it makes perfect sense to me. I think it’s because I read so much about  that time period, but I’m determined to go back in time and buy a hotdog for a dollar, instead of ten dollars.

  1. Briston-
Inflation is a great topic to write a satire on, but you need to give more explanation to story to make it complete. Also, I know your technique of exaggeration came from the example of Rash (which is cool that you picked up on this), but the reader needs to know why the exaggeration has been done. Good foundation to a satire though.
